I am from an old quilt spread out on my bed
From the trees in the yard and the lap of my grandmother
I am from the trailer on the hill
And the unpaved road going up
I am from the Easter flowers
Whose lives don’t last very long
I am from the train tracks and creeks
From Knight and Styons
I am from blue eyes and freckles
And from stubbornness
From strength
I am from the white church with red doors
I am from Kathleen and Louis
From tuna gravy and chocolate chip cookies
From serving in the Air Force
And from raising children
A stuffed duck named Hermen
